Electric Shuttle Bus Trial Launched in Sanur, Bali – Free for Public and Tourists

Since August 1, 2025, the Denpasar City Government has been conducting a trial run of electric shuttle buses in the Sanur tourism area. During this trial period, rides are free of charge for both locals and visitors.

The shuttle buses, painted in vibrant red, white, and black, can accommodate up to nine passengers. Its design stands out from regular buses—passenger seats are covered only by a roof without side walls, giving riders an open-air experience. While this means you might feel the tropical sun during the day, it also offers an unobstructed view of Sanur’s charming streets.

The driver’s area is enclosed like a standard car, providing comfort and safety. This eco-friendly initiative aims to help reduce traffic congestion in the popular tourist zone.

Popular Among Locals and Tourists

The electric shuttle has quickly attracted attention from both Balinese residents and international travelers. At Mertasari Beach, many foreign tourists could be seen riding or waiting for their turn.

One visitor, Sue Mather from Australia, shared that she and her husband Bruce had taken the shuttle five times already.

“We often walk around Sanur, and when we saw the shuttle passing by, we thought we should try it. It’s something new here and it’s great,” Sue said.

Their journey usually includes stops at Sindu Market, Icon Mall, and back to Mertasari Beach. Sue praised the free fare, although she noted that tourists without an electronic tap card might face difficulties once the service becomes paid.

Bruce agreed, adding that if the shuttle becomes a paid service in the future, the government should make it easy for tourists to obtain a tap card.

“This bus could be one solution to reduce traffic, but it needs to be accessible for all,” he said.

Future Plans for Sanur’s Electric Shuttle

Denpasar’s mayor, I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara, announced that the city plans to deploy six electric shuttles, each with a capacity of 10 to 14 passengers. The buses will operate around Jalan Danau Tamblingan every 10 minutes, connecting parking zones to restaurants, shops, and attractions.

To support this, the city will prepare designated parking areas and conduct traffic studies, ensuring the system is convenient for both tourists and locals.

Experience Sanur in a greener way—hop on the electric shuttle bus and enjoy the sights while helping reduce traffic congestion.
